Stopping Camping

Postby Thorbard on Thu Jan 27, 2005 5:54 pm

I saw in one of the threads that there wouldn't be sniper rifles in the game to stop camping.

While this will go some way to stopping the problem I do not think that it will work particularly well. The thing that encourage camping is not the weapon selection - any fairly acurate weapon will do for a camper - but has more todo with the map design and the gameplay mechanics.

A map where a camper can get into a realively safe vantage point all the time and stay there for a long time is more likely to encourage the habit than an open map with little in the way of cover.

A fluid gameplay system, where people are forced to move around constantly will keep the number of campers down.

Things like "random" weapon and ammo re-appeance, moving objectives and open maps will all help to decrease camping. Equally, making it easier to move about with the heavier weapons (not like in CS where sniper rifles dont have crosshairs, and moving scoped is slow) will encourage the inverse of camping, fluidiity and movement.

Despite this I think that whatever you do there will be some people who still camp. The trick is to encourage people into different gameplay styles, rather than trying to force them out of their existing habits.

At least from what I've gleaned, it seems that vampires are more powerful close-in, but, lacking weapons, need to close distance. Therefore, it would not be in a slayer's best interest to hang around in one place, especially a small one. Sniping wouldn't seem to be a problem, since you need to be close-in to take down a vampire. So, the vampires are more powerful close up, but the slayers need to be able to reach the vampire before it recovers from the attack, so you can't be too far away from it, resulting in a nice balance. At least, that's the way I would do it.

yep you pretty much said it all, also no sniper weapons wont eliminate campers, I am aware of that, but it certainly doesnt encourage them to camp (like sniper weapons do).

Also MAAS and the general keep moving gameplay will take care of the camping problem. Like aswilson already said, a hunter who camps in a small dark place may easily become a victim to a vampire.

Well, thats nice to know. Maybe have some longer ranged weapons for "support" players. Not quite in the sniping range, more like what most gaems would have as mid range. WW2 style bolt actions or winchester rifle sort of thing. Not scoped, but long enough to stay behind the close up specialists.

Ah, that would be quite good too. I agree with some other peoples' posts... preventing camping is all about map design. If they don't have a good place to camp, they won't.
