I found this by accident when I was looking for games to our linux comp (went through a list of games that might be interesting). It turned out to be a great game, simple but very effective. (One of the most played games in our house atm...)
It is called Battle for Wesnoth, and there is also a version for Windows

Wow! This Forum Topic has gathered dust.
Well I just stumbled across a FREE MOTPS (Multiplayer Online Third Person Shooter) called GUNZ: The Duel.
It plays like The Specialists mod for Half-Life. You can do John Woo styled stunts such as diving, wall rumbing, duel wielding, and deflecting bullets with swords.

You have to register of course, but the game is free. It's pretty cool and well designed.

Oh and while you're at ijji.com, you might also want to check out Soldier Front. Another free FPS, but more emphasis is placed on strategy and realism. In other words, it plays like Counter-Strike.

I've heard GunZ is full of glitch abuse and hackers. And I remember it didn't work the first time I tried to install it. However I've been wanting to give SF a try for a while now.
