No Newsupdate

Postby Ghostface on Sun Apr 17, 2005 7:25 pm

Well some of you already heard about it. I lost all data on my harddisk. However fear not, I got a backup of most of the Nosferatu related stuff, so its not the end of the world. The loss involved mostly private stuff like my emails, "my documents" folder, logs and various other stuff. Nosferatu related, the source changes of the last month, the autoupdater source, the drs vector logo as well as the latest version of my desert map has been lost.
While the loss set us back a month in terms of the sourcecode, its possible to recover some code snippets and maybe some parts of the desert map ( I still got an older version of the desert map, so I dont have to redo it completely, should it be not possible to recover it).

While it's a sad incident, it is not the end of the world and it could have been much worse. We definitely wont stop Nosferatu, and aside from the things mentioned its only minor stuff which was lost.

However be warned, make regular BACKUPS, to avoid a deep depression in case of a sudden data loss. As a result from this, I will start making regular backups in shorter time periods from now on as well as a regular SVN commit after each source change.

I am still in the process of getting everything reinstalled and setup again, so this is the reason why there isnt any news update today.

Should you be interested in how the data loss happened, check my .plan

Ehh, bad luck Ghost. Its always depressing when you work on something, and it screws up, so then you dont want to work on it all over again. Good luck with recovering.

Yeah, you said on IRC. Too bad. Just remember to make backups - we don't want this to happen again, now do we?
Good luck on getting the system back up.

lol, sadly its not a ruse, so please dont send me that haunted stitch toy 8O

However I was able to recover most of the sourcecode changes from the past month, including the autoupdater, so its not as worse as it could have been.

The loss sux, indeed. If it makes you feel a little better maybe, I was able to get my machine to load windows again. Apparently it was just the one corrupted systems file and all the other data was intact.

GF had a data loss incident, and I had a data loss incident, seperately and nearly concurrently. My data has been recovered, and as I understand it, most of GF has been too... So good news all around.
